NEW BOOKS, INTERESTING AUTHORS
From time to time, I enjoy spotlighting new books and interesting authors. Today, I’m shining the light on Author Gay Ingram. I’ve asked Gay to tell us about a favorite character in her books.
Gay lives in the Piney Woods of East Texas and is a writer of great experience. Let’s find out what she’s been up to!
Thank you, Patty, for inviting me to guest-post on your blog today. I'm not sure I have a favorite character. Seems like each one I create holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps sharing how I came to write fictionalized biographies for Young Readers will illustrate what I mean.
I did not.
Curious, I did some research and found out the event of his father’s death (who had been a surveyor) became the catalyst for a major change in George’s life. You see, he had anticipated following in his older brothers' footsteps and go to England to be educated. His dream was to join the British Navy and sail the world as the older brother Lawrence, whom he greatly admired, had done. His father's dying left no funds for George to travel to England.
A chance discovery of his father's surveying instruments led George to teach himself how to use the r. This led to his earning a living and reputation from surveying. George Washington, From Boy Surveyor To Soldier focuses on those momentous ten years between his father’s death and his first Army commission; years that influenced the direction of his life.
One of the truths I came away with after writing this book is that life is filled with chance moments. Unexpected twists that seem inconsequential at the time can have tremendous influence on future events.
The project gave me such satisfaction, I've gone on to search out the little-known events of two more figures who played an important part in our country's history. Look for Harriet Tubman and Belle Boyd, A Teenage Confederate Spy in the near future.
Wow, that's so interesting. We're looking forward to more from Author Gay Ingram! Thank you Gay!
